BBC Journalists Share Amazing Stories From Around the World

June 7, 2026 · BBC

New podcast episode features three incredible stories about a missing soldier, violent gangs, and fortune telling with computers.

BBC journalists from around the world have shared three amazing stories in their latest podcast. The stories come from different countries and tell us about people's lives in surprising ways. One story is about finding a missing soldier from World War Two. Another looks at dangerous gangs in Kenya.

The first story takes place on the island of Jersey during World War Two. A Soviet soldier named Tom escaped from Nazi prisoners and hid with a local family called the Le Bretons. For more than 80 years, nobody knew what happened to Tom after the war ended. BBC teams worked hard to track down Tom's family members and finally solved this old mystery.

The second story comes from Kenya in Africa. Politicians there pay young people called 'goons' to hurt their enemies. These gangs threaten people and sometimes attack them during election time. BBC reporter Wycliffe Muia studied these violent groups to find ways to stop them.

The third story explores South Korea's fortune telling traditions. People there use something called Saju to predict the future. This old practice uses a person's birth date and time to tell them what might happen in their life. Now, smart computer technology is mixing with this ancient tradition.

After the general election in 2007 over 1500 people were killed and with another election planned for 2027, there are fears violence could erupt again.
