BALLS on the Moon: Africa's First Lunar Science Mission Set for 2029

Three spherical probes built by African scientists could ride China's Chang'e-8 lander to the moon's south pole to listen for signals from the oldest parts of the universe.

Africa could be sending its very first mission to the moon as soon as 2029. A project called Africa2Moon has built three small, ball-shaped probes that may travel to the moon's south pole on China's Chang'e-8 spacecraft. The probes are called BALLS, which stands for Bounced African Low Lunar Sphere. If the mission works, it will mark a historic moment for space science across the African continent.

The BALLS probes are designed to act as a radio telescope on the moon. Each metal sphere holds antennas that can pick up very low-frequency radio signals from space. These signals come from some of the oldest and most distant parts of the universe. Scientists cannot pick them up from Earth because our planet's atmosphere and human-made radio interference block them out.

The moon is one of the quietest places near Earth when it comes to radio signals. The far side of the moon has almost no radio noise at all, making it a perfect spot for a telescope that listens to the universe. The three BALLS probes will be spread out on the lunar surface and work together to collect these signals. They will then send the data back to Earth through the Chinese lander.

Each BALLS probe has a clever design. It is built like a gyroscope, with interlocking rings forming a round frame. Inside, two large triangle-shaped solar panels — one pointing up and one pointing down — power the device. This gives the whole structure a shape similar to a tetrahedron, which is like a 3D triangle.

The China National Space Administration chose the Africa2Moon project in April 2025 as one of about a dozen science experiments to fly on Chang'e-8. The probes can observe radio waves below 20 megahertz, a range completely blocked from Earth by the upper atmosphere. If the mission succeeds, the team hopes to eventually build a much larger array of 55 antennas on the far side of the moon.

The mission is led by the Foundation for Space Development Africa, and it also involves research groups from Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, and other African nations. The physical parts of the probes were built by teams in Cape Town and at two South African universities. The probes were assembled in April 2026 and will be delivered to China's Chang'e-8 team for testing.

Mission director Carla Mitchell shared her personal story when she spoke at NASA's Ames Research Center on July 22, 2026. She said that as a little girl, she never believed space exploration was possible for people in Africa. Mitchell has spent years guiding the project from its early paperwork stages all the way to building real hardware. Her talk inspired many in the audience.

Scientists outside the project are excited about what Africa2Moon has accomplished. Clive Neal, a lunar science expert and professor at the University of Notre Dame, said he was amazed the mission was built mostly by volunteers on a very small budget. "If this is successful, it will ignite the reality of space on the African continent," he said. Neal also noted that the broader space science community in the United States is ready to help the team if needed.

The team is already thinking about what comes next. A second, bigger mission would place 55 antennas on the moon's far side to gather even more signals from deep space. That mission would need a new launch and would likely require China as a partner again. The second mission's probes would launch flat and then open into a ball shape on the lunar surface, spreading out more quickly to cover a wider area and improve the science.
