Kneeling Chairs Could Help Your Back Pain From Computer Work

May 29, 2026 · NBC News

Special chairs make sitting at desks better for your spine and muscles.

Many students and workers get back pain from sitting at computers all day. Regular desk chairs can hurt your back when you lean forward for hours. Now, doctors say kneeling chairs might be a better choice for people with back problems. These special chairs are designed to help your body sit in a healthier way.

Kneeling chairs work differently than normal chairs because they change how your body is positioned. They open your hips and make your core muscles work harder to keep you balanced. This helps keep your back straight and reduces pain over time. Doctors have studied these chairs and found they really can help people feel better when working at desks.

There are three main types of kneeling chairs that work for different people and situations. Balans chairs have curved wooden bases that let you rock back and forth gently. X-framed chairs have metal frames shaped like an X and can change height easily to fit different people. Saddle chairs look like horse saddles and don't have knee pads to rest on, so you sit on top of them.

Regular desk chairs put your lower back at a 7-degree angle, which creates problems over time. This might be okay for short periods, but it causes pain when you lean forward to use a computer for hours. Your back muscles get tired and start to hurt because they're working in the wrong position. Many people develop serious back pain from sitting this way every day at school or work.

Kneeling chairs solve this problem by completely changing how your body sits and moves. They put your spine at a 20-degree angle instead of the harmful 7-degree angle of regular chairs. This makes your back muscles work the right way and takes pressure off your spine. Your hips also sit in a more open position at about 110 degrees, which helps your whole body line up correctly from your neck to your shoulders.

Kneeling chairs align your lumbar spine at a 20-degree angle, which helps contract your postural stabilizer muscles and improve lower back pain.
