Australia Cricket Star Megan Schutt Banned Two Matches Over Medication Mistake

October 22, 2026 · The Guardian

The veteran bowler says she is sorry for breaking medicine rules, though the breach had nothing to do with performance-enhancing drugs.

Australian women's cricket star Megan Schutt has been banned from playing for two matches after breaking rules about prescription medication. Cricket Australia announced the ban on Thursday. The 33-year-old bowler said she is sorry and accepts the punishment. Officials made clear that the mistake had nothing to do with drugs that help athletes perform better.

Schutt broke what are called Sports Science and Sports Medicine guidelines. These are rules that tell players how to properly use prescription medicines. Cricket Australia said the mistake happened just once, outside of a competition, and was not meant to give her any unfair advantage on the field. The organisation said it will keep supporting Schutt while also reminding all players of their responsibilities.

Schutt served the first match of her ban on Thursday night when Australia's T20 game against New Zealand in Sydney was rained out. A T20 is a short, fast style of cricket match. Even though the game was washed out, it still counted as the first of her two suspended matches. She is expected to sit out her second match when her club team, the Adelaide Strikers, opens their Women's Big Bash League season against the Melbourne Stars on 31 October.

In a public statement, Schutt took full responsibility for what happened. 'I fully accept the penalty handed down and apologise for failing to meet the standards expected of me,' she said. She added that players regularly receive education on the guidelines and that she should have followed them. She also thanked people for the support she received after the news came out.

Schutt has been a key player for Australia's women's cricket team since she first played for them in 2012. She is one of the top-ten wicket-takers in the history of women's cricket. Across 244 international matches — including Tests, One Day Internationals, and T20s — she has taken 319 wickets. Most recently, she was outstanding in a three-match series against Bangladesh, where she took 10 wickets and helped Australia win.
