At the World Cup, Egypt Coach Says Anyone Who Doesn't Feel for Palestinian People Is 'Not Human'

July 6, 2026 · Washington Post

Egypt's Hossam Hassan used a pre-match press conference to speak passionately about the suffering of Palestinians before his team's game against Argentina.

Egypt's soccer coach, Hossam Hassan, made headlines at the FIFA World Cup on Monday when he spoke out strongly about the Palestinian people. Instead of only talking about his team's upcoming game, he gave a powerful speech that lasted more than four minutes. Many of the reporters in the room applauded when he finished. His words came just before Egypt's round of 16 match against defending champion Argentina in Atlanta.

Hassan said that anyone in the world who doesn't feel for the Palestinian people is 'not human.' He said this applies to people of all backgrounds — Arab, European, and American alike. He had already shown his support by waving a Palestinian flag after Egypt beat Australia in the previous round. His speech reminded many people that the World Cup is not just about soccer — it can also be a stage for important world issues.

The conflict Hassan was speaking about began on October 7, 2023, when the group Hamas attacked Israel. Israel then launched a military response in Gaza. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed. More than 2 million Palestinians have been forced from their homes and are living in ruined areas, unsure of what the future holds.

Hassan compared the world's reaction to harm done to animals versus harm done to people. He said that when an animal is hurt, the whole world reacts with outrage. Yet, he pointed out, it has become 'normal' to hear that thousands of people die in a single day from missiles. He used this comparison to argue that people should care just as much — or more — about human lives. His words were emotional and direct.

The Egypt coach also brought up FIFA's own message of respect. FIFA is the organization that runs the World Cup. Hassan said he hopes FIFA's call for respect will also mean respecting every person's right to live. FIFA has confirmed that displaying the Palestinian flag at the World Cup is allowed. Spanish soccer star Lamine Yamal is among the athletes who have also shown support for Palestinians during the tournament.

Hassan also spoke about Egypt's chances in the tournament. He said his dreams and ambitions have no limits, and he promised fans that Egypt would give everything they have. He reminded listeners that Egypt is a civilization more than 7,000 years old. A win over Argentina would send Egypt to the quarterfinals for the very first time in the team's World Cup history. Hassan made it clear — his team does not see itself as an underdog.

"If there is anyone in the world who does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they are not human -- whether they are Arab, European, or American."
