More Americans Work Past Age 80, Including President Trump

June 13, 2026 · BBC

About 19% of people over 65 still have jobs as the number of older workers grows.

President Donald Trump turns 80 years old on Sunday. This makes him one of the oldest world leaders. Trump is part of a growing group of Americans who work well past the normal retirement age of 67.

Dr. Arthur Rose just retired at age 95 after working as a doctor for over 65 years. He gave himself retirement as a birthday gift. Rose said the job was not making him happy anymore. He was part of a trend where more older Americans keep working.

The number of people over 65 who still work has grown four times bigger since the 1980s. About 19% of people in this age group have jobs today. They work in many different types of jobs. Some even have important jobs like being lawmakers or company leaders.

Money is also a big reason why some people keep working. The cost of living keeps going up in America. A recent survey found that almost 30% of retired people are thinking about getting part-time jobs. Over 60% say rising costs are the main reason.

However, getting older can sometimes make work harder. Age-related problems like memory loss or feeling tired can get in the way. These health issues became a problem for former President Joe Biden. After a poor debate performance, people worried about his thinking abilities.

Working has kept me young, vigorous, energetic, knowledgeable, fun.
