Liverpool Soccer Manager Fired After Poor Season

May 30, 2026 · BBC

Arne Slot lost his job after expensive new players failed to help the team win games.

Liverpool also signed a player named Wirtz who was supposed to help the team score more goals. Instead, he made the defense weaker because he couldn't play in his best position. The team tried moving him around the field, but nothing seemed to work. He showed some good skills at times, but not enough to help the team win.

The team wanted to buy a defender named Guehi to help protect their goal. Crystal Palace refused to sell him to Liverpool in the summer. Later, Manchester City bought Guehi for less money than Liverpool was willing to pay. This made Liverpool's defense even worse when their best defenders started playing poorly.

As the season went on, Manager Slot tried many different ways to fix the team. He changed the formation and put different players in new positions. His substitutions that worked so well last season now seemed desperate and confused. Nothing he tried seemed to work anymore.

The season started badly with Liverpool winning games by scoring in the last minute. This made them look exciting but also showed they had problems. When Crystal Palace beat them in September with a last-second goal, everything fell apart. The team lost confidence and couldn't recover from that defeat.

The broken leg was another serious disruption for a player meant to provide Liverpool with a lethal spearhead.
