Giant Ship Brings 5,000 Electric Cars to Australia
Chinese company BYD says the delivery shows how quickly electric cars are becoming popular.
A massive ship docked in Melbourne on Sunday with 5,000 electric cars on board. The ship belongs to BYD, a Chinese company that makes electric vehicles. Energy experts say this delivery could change how Australians travel forever. The ship usually carries cars from China to South America but came to Australia because demand for electric cars is growing fast.
More people started wanting electric cars in March because of fighting in the Middle East. When wars happened, oil prices went up everywhere. This made people look for cars that don't need gasoline. Stephen Collins from BYD Australia said his company could respond quickly to help meet this new demand.
BYD controls every part of making and selling cars, which makes it special. The company digs up the materials it needs and builds its own batteries. It makes the cars and owns ships to deliver them around the world. This system helps BYD make fast decisions when customers want more cars.
Electric car sales jumped in many countries during March. In Europe, sales went up 44 percent compared to the same time last year. South Korea saw sales double, and Italy had a 76 percent increase. Tim Buckley, who studies energy, says this ship's arrival shows electric cars are becoming much more important in Australia.
BYD has car factories in several countries including China, Thailand, and Brazil. In China, the company has a special production line that can build a complete car in just 52 seconds. These factories make right-hand drive cars specially designed for Australia and New Zealand. Australian BYD workers talk daily with company leaders who can approve new production quickly.
It's a turning point for EVs in Australia.
