Americans Pay $2,400 Each to Fund Trump's Deportation Push, Analysis Finds

A new report says that the average American taxpayer is paying about $2,400 to fund President Donald Trump's effort to deport and detain immigrants. The Economic Policy Institute, a research group, built a tool to show how much each person pays toward the program. In total, the government has set aside nearly $269 billion for deportations and detention centers. The report raises questions about whether that money could be better used on things like schools, healthcare, and housing.

The cost is not the same for everyone across the country. People who pay more in federal income taxes end up contributing more to the total. For example, people in Mississippi pay about $1,376 on average, while people in Nevada pay around $2,421. Where you live and how much you earn affects how much of the bill you carry.

The Economic Policy Institute says the money could be used in other ways that would help more people. Instead of funding deportations, it says the same amount of money could pay for more than 900,000 school teachers. It could also fund one million firefighters, over 700,000 nurses, and medical care for more than 5 million veterans. Nearly 12 million people could be enrolled in Medicaid, which is a government health program for people with low incomes.

The report also says the funds could create 9.7 million public housing units and provide food assistance to 118 million more people through the SNAP program. More than 6 million parents could receive 12 weeks of paid time off after having a baby. The institute says these are 'missed opportunities' caused by spending so much on deportation. It argues that many people in need are being left without help.

In Minnesota, tensions have been especially high over immigration enforcement. Federal agents shot and killed two American citizens during protests there. The institute says $4.4 billion in taxpayer money is being spent in Minnesota alone to detain immigrants. That works out to roughly $2,000 per household in the state.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security pushed back on the report. The spokesperson said it was 'ridiculous' that the cost of enforcing immigration law was making headlines. They also said the deportation effort is actually saving taxpayers money. The government is encouraging some migrants to leave on their own through a phone app called CBP Home, offering them $2,600 and a free flight home through a program called Project Homecoming.

According to the government, one person choosing to self-deport costs about $5,100, compared to more than $18,000 if they are deported by force. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, has deported more than 350,000 people so far in the 2026 fiscal year. The agency plans to deport one million people in 2026 and 2027. It also plans to hold at least 99,000 people in detention centers on any given day.

The money for deportations comes from several places. Some came from Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' which was signed into law last year. Other funds come from regular government spending and money that was moved from other programs. As costs grow, some of President Trump's allies have reportedly grown frustrated with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who took the job less than six months ago after the previous secretary was removed.
