American Airlines puts its best seats first in bold new plan

October 28, 2026 · Newsweek

The airline is betting that better seats, smoother trips, and new technology will win over travelers willing to pay more.

American Airlines is changing the way it does business, with a strong focus on high-end travel. The airline's top sales executive, Nat Pieper, shared the new plan at a conference in September. He has worked in the airline industry for 29 years and has led American's sales team for nearly a year. His plan centers on making travel feel like a full experience, not just a flight.

About half of all the money American Airlines earns now comes from its premium seats. Those seats — like business class and first class — make up only about 30 percent of the seats on its planes. Because so few seats bring in so much money, the airline is rethinking what matters most. Premium revenue is growing faster than revenue from regular seats.

Pieper says today's travelers want more than just transportation from one place to another. They want the whole trip to feel smooth and enjoyable, starting before they even get to the airport. That's why American is spending money on airport lounges and fancy business-class seats called Flagship Suites. The goal is to sell a great experience, not just a plane ticket.

Running flights on time is another key part of the new plan. American has had trouble in the past with delays and keeping flights on schedule. Now the airline is putting money into better operations to fix that problem. Pieper returned to the word 'reliability' many times when describing what American wants to improve.

The airline is also rethinking how its hub in Dallas, Texas, is set up. Bad weather in Dallas can stop flights and cause delays that last the whole day. To handle that better, American is giving flights a little more time between connections, even if it means fewer flights overall. 'We decided to go deeper a little bit,' Pieper said, meaning they want a schedule that bounces back from problems more easily.

American is planning to grow its international routes in a big way. Pieper said the airline expects 50 new planes able to fly long international routes to arrive between 2027 and 2030. These planes will help American reach more places around the world. International travel is seen as one of the most important areas for future growth.

Technology is also a big part of the plan, but Pieper says it is a tool, not the goal. The real aim is to understand that different travelers want very different things. One traveler might want a luxury seat and a smooth, easy journey, while another just wants the lowest price. American wants to serve both kinds of travelers well, and that makes the plan more complicated than it might seem.

Pieper sees travelers increasingly buying an experience rather than transportation alone.
