Alvarez Left Out of Atletico's First Game as Barcelona Transfer Rumors Swirl

August 18, 2026 · The Independent

Coach Diego Simeone says star striker Julian Alvarez won't play in Wednesday's opener, but hopes he'll be ready by Sunday.

Julian Alvarez, one of Atletico Madrid's top soccer players, will not play in his team's first La Liga game of the season. Coach Diego Simeone made the announcement on Tuesday, a day before Atletico faces Malaga. The reason has a lot to do with rumors that Alvarez wants to leave Atletico and join Barcelona.

Alvarez is 26 years old and plays as a striker, meaning he is one of the players whose job it is to score goals. Atletico bought him from Manchester City in 2024 for €75 million, which is a huge amount of money. Since joining, he has scored 49 goals in 106 games, making him one of the team's most important players.

Even so, Alvarez has been open about wanting to move to a different club. At the World Cup, he said he had talked with Atletico about a possible transfer to help him 'fulfil my dream.' Many reporters in Spain believe that dream is to play for Barcelona, one of the most famous soccer clubs in the world.

Atletico's top boss, CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, has said the club will not sell Alvarez — not even for €200 million. That is an enormous amount of money, but Atletico says it doesn't matter. Simeone backed up his boss by comparing the decision to a judge making a final ruling in court, saying it is 'crystal clear' and 'dismissed.'

Because of all this uncertainty, Simeone decided to leave Alvarez off the team for Wednesday's game. The coach said he hopes the situation will improve over the next few days. He is counting on Alvarez being fit and focused enough to play in Sunday's home match against Villarreal.

Simeone also said Alvarez still needs more practice before he is at his best. 'He needs more practice,' the coach told reporters. Despite all the transfer talk, Simeone made it clear he still sees Alvarez as the team's best player and wants to build the squad around him.

Alvarez has also been connected to Arsenal, a top English club that wants to add a strong forward. Arsenal is looking to compete for the Premier League title and thinks Alvarez could help. However, Alvarez has made it clear he would rather go to Barcelona than to Arsenal or anywhere else. For now, though, Atletico is holding firm — Alvarez is not for sale.

"He's the best player we have and we're going to try to build a team around him, keeping his level in mind."
