AI Helps Create More Patents at India's Tech Centers
Global companies say artificial intelligence is speeding up invention at their Indian offices.
Companies from around the world are using artificial intelligence to create new inventions faster at their offices in India. Big businesses like car makers and tech companies say AI helps their workers move beyond simple tasks. Instead, workers can focus on building new products and getting patents for their ideas. This shows how India has become an important place for creating new technology.
India's technology centers used to mainly do basic computer work for cheap costs. Now they have grown into places where companies invent new things. Workers at these centers create patents, which are legal protections for new inventions. AI tools that can write computer code and do other tasks are changing what these centers will do next.
Companies like Daimler Truck, Kimberly-Clark, and Epsilon have offices in India called Global Capability Centers. These centers made about $98 billion last year, which was much more than expected. Patent applications in India went up by 11% to over 90,000 last year. Nearly half of these came from companies based in other countries.
However, many Indian centers don't actually file their patents in India. Instead, they send their inventions to be patented in the United States or Europe. This happens because getting a patent approved in India takes too long and costs too much money. The process can take five to six months just to file, which is twice as long as in the US.
India's patent office doesn't have enough workers to review all the applications quickly. There are also confusing rules and high legal costs that make companies avoid filing patents in India. Some lawyers say the patent office has too much work and not enough people to handle it all.
The Indian government is trying to make the patent process easier. They have moved more services online and use video calls for meetings. This helps people apply for patents without traveling to the patent office. The government has also changed how they assign applications to different offices.
Despite these problems, company leaders believe Indian tech centers will keep growing. They think these centers will do more high-value work in the future. The strong foundation that Indian centers have built will help them take on bigger and more important projects as AI technology continues to improve.
AI would accelerate it.
