Computer Memory Prices Skyrocket Because of AI Boom
Memory chips that used to cost $100 now sell for $300, making computers more expensive for everyone.
Computer memory chips are becoming much more expensive because of artificial intelligence. Chris Barber owns a computer repair shop in Baltimore and has worked with computers for 25 years. He says memory chips that cost $100 six months ago now cost $300. This is making it harder for people to fix their computers and is causing prices to go up everywhere.
The problem started because companies are building lots of new data centers. Data centers are huge buildings full of computers that run artificial intelligence programs. These data centers need millions of memory chips to work properly. When everyone wants to buy the same thing at once, prices go up fast.
This isn't just affecting computer repair shops like Barber's. Memory chips are inside almost everything we use today. They're in our phones, cars, video game systems, and televisions. When memory chips cost more, all these products become more expensive too.
The high prices are part of a bigger problem with inflation in America. Inflation means things cost more money than they used to. In May, computer software and accessories cost 14.5% more than they did a year before. This was the biggest increase ever recorded for these products.
Usually, technology gets cheaper over time as companies learn to make it better. For most of the 2000s, computer prices dropped by about 5% each year. But now the opposite is happening because of the huge demand for AI technology. The Federal Reserve is the organization that watches inflation in America.
Building all these data centers is also creating lots of new jobs. Companies need construction workers, electricians, and heating specialists to build the centers. This is good for workers, but it also means companies have to pay higher wages. Higher wages can lead to higher prices for products.
Parts themselves are just completely out of control.
