Teen Arrested After Finding Mom's Suicide Attempt
A 16-year-old boy is suing London police for arresting him when they should have helped him during a family crisis.
A teenage boy came home to find his mother had tried to hurt herself very badly. Instead of helping him, police arrested him and said he tried to kill his mother. Now 20 years old, Daryl McLune is taking the London police to court. He says they treated him unfairly because he is Black.
The scary event happened in July 2021 when Daryl was 16 years old. He had been visiting his grandmother and came home on his bike. When he got there, he found that his mother Annette had tried to end her own life. She was badly hurt and fighting to stay alive.
Police had already arrived at the family's apartment building. Daryl's father had called them after finding blood and realizing his wife was missing. When Daryl showed up, he was upset and confused about what happened. The officers put handcuffs on him right in the street where all his neighbors could see.
The police took Daryl to jail and kept him there for almost a whole day. During that time, they would not tell him if his mother was alive or dead. This made the scared teenager feel even more alone and worried. He had never been in trouble with police before and had always been a good student.
Daryl's lawyers say the police made a big mistake. They think the officers saw a Black teenager and quickly decided he must have done something wrong. Instead of treating him like a scared child who needed help, they treated him like a criminal. The lawyers say this shows the police were biased against him because of his race.
He was not an adult, he was a child.
