Baseball Star Shohei Ohtani Regrets Not Challenging Umpire Calls in Big Loss
The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a five-run lead and fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8 after questionable umpire calls.
Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani had a night to forget in Pittsburgh. His Los Angeles Dodgers team lost a big game 9-8 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Dodgers were winning by five runs but couldn't hold onto their lead. Ohtani plays both pitcher and batter for his team, which makes him very special in baseball.
The problems started when Ohtani was pitching in the seventh inning. Some umpire calls seemed wrong, but Ohtani didn't challenge them. In baseball, teams can ask officials to review calls they think are wrong. Ohtani usually lets his catchers make these decisions, but this time he wishes he had spoken up. The Pirates then scored many runs and won the game.
Pittsburgh player Tyler Callihan hit two home runs in the game, including one that helped his team take the lead. Spencer Horwitz also hit a big home run for the Pirates. Even though Ohtani hit a home run too, it wasn't enough to save his team. The Dodgers had been almost perfect this year when leading after seven innings, so this loss was very surprising.
I usually let the catchers make that determination, but looking back, I think situationally, how important it was that at-bat, looking back I think I could have done a few challenges.
